The city of Japan Standard Time Meridian is situated exactly on 135°east longitude.
The city of seaside parks and industry faces the Akashi straits and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world, and plays an important role in both sea and land transportation as well as in industry and commerce.
The city of history and culture dates back to the very early history of mankind.
Some fossils of the 'Akashi elephant' and 'Akashi early man' were excavated in the city. Akashi has often appeared, and played an important role, in famous old Japanese poems and literature, such as the tale of Genji. Akashi castle was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century.
The town developed around the castle and grew into modern Akashi, with a population of nearly 300,000.
The Great South Hyogo Earthquake.
At 5:46 on January 17, 1995, the great quake hit the city. 26 people died, about 2,000 were injured and nearly 10,000 houses were destroyed. |
